Where Bakersfield eats
Old Town Kern, east of downtown, holds Bakersfield's cluster of Basque restaurants, family style sit down rooms serving set menus at long communal tables, drawing multi generation families and out of town visitors at fixed per person prices. Downtown Bakersfield, centered near 19th Street, mixes daytime office lunch counters with a smaller evening restaurant and bar scene that depends on nearby event traffic from the convention center and Mechanics Bank Arena. Stockdale, on the city's southwest side, carries newer shopping center restaurants and chain concepts aimed at higher income households near the Stockdale Highway corridor. Westchester, closer to downtown, holds an older residential mix of taquerias and diners serving working class lunch crowds at lower prices. East Bakersfield runs a dense stretch of Mexican restaurants and taco trucks serving both longtime residents and agricultural and oilfield workers on tight lunch breaks. Because Old Town Kern's Basque restaurants depend heavily on visiting families and group bookings rather than daily walk ins, a slow weekend there hits revenue harder than a slow weekend at a Stockdale strip mall restaurant with steadier neighborhood traffic.
